Home Networking Tips

  1. Set up/Configure your router by connecting to it via an Ethernet cable.

  2. Change the router login password.

  3. If you intend to use your wireless capabilities make sure you use the security features of your particular router and password protect your connection. Without password protection on a wireless network other people near your home would be able to connect to your network. This can lead to you paying for bandwidth that they use, or even to the more serious issue of them downloading illegal content that could be associated with your connection!

  4. If you are unsure as to what a particular setting relates to READ the help files or post a question in our forum .Don't go changing settings unless you are sure of the consequences of changing them.

  5. There are two types of security for wireless networks; WiFi Protected Access (WPA) and Wired Equipment Privacy (WEP). Of these WPA is the newer and more robust. We would recommend that you choose wireless equipment that can use WPA.

  6. Occasionally take a look at the log files. These will often help determine hacking attempts, router/connection stability etc. The great thing about most wireless routers is that they come with a built in firewall that adds an extra layer of protection to all your computers. We wouldn't suggest you remove firewall software from your computers. This extra level of security is always worth having.
